What we do and how we do it

The roots

It all started in childhood with the construction of flying kites. The fascination continued and so Frank Schwiemann and Christine Schwarting were invited to many kite festivals around the globe during their design studies because of their creations. The sky always as a gallery.

It was during this period that he began to explore light rod constructions in combination with fabric. The two recognised the potential and began to transport the theme into interiors after their studies. Initially with artistic works and the realisation of exhibitions. Later with its own design collection.

By the way, every airformance object is designed and manufactured in the company’s own studio.

We design for you

You have a stage or a space. We design a scene for you with airformance objects. The proposals are digitally visualised and quickly give an impression of the possible set. The design sketch helps to make targeted and quick decisions.

As a design team, we are your partner for custom textile objects. Do you have a rough idea? Then let us have a go at it. We draw your special designs and plan the technical design.

If drafts are already available, we check the feasibility and submit concrete proposals for implementation. I’m sure we can think of something. Just ask us.

The craft in the studio

One huge advantage is that we have our own workshops. They allow us to quickly try out construction methods and details. We deliberately speak of an atelier, because this designation illustrates the artisanal aspects very well. Yes, we bend our own aluminium. We saw, drill, cut and sew.

Various tests and productive customer appointments can be carried out in the studio. You are close to the material and the object. Results are quickly visible. A lot of experience and manual work is involved in the production of the blanks. Prototypes are common to find an optimal fit of the fabrics.

We can do a lot ourselves. For everything else, for example prints, there are reliable partners. The whole thing takes place in Krefeld in a former upholstery fabric weaving mill from the 1950s.

How are airformance designs created?

There are four main histories of airformance objects. Many designs develop out of the material. In experiments, for example, they try out what a fabric can do. Sometimes it harbours qualities that virtually demand a certain form. A form is then worked out on the basis of concrete models.

We also listen carefully. If customers emphasise the importance of room dividers, for example, we think about this topic.

Ebenso wichtig sind die freien Gestaltungen, die aus einer plötzlichen Idee oder Inspiration heraus entstehen. They often ignite the motivational spark particularly strongly. Surprising things emerge here.

Another approach are sketches that are brought to us with the question: Can you do something like this? Then we take the design and work on it so that it can be implemented with our methods. We call that technical design.

The project process

When we receive an enquiry, we first clarify the general conditions. What is desired? Are there any approaches? Is advice needed? Should drafts be made? Is there a delivery date? Does digital data exist?

The next step is individual. airformance design is happy to advise and support you with 3D data, scene sketches, know-how and photos. Customised offers are made. The aim is a pleasant, uncomplicated and quick process.

If desired, we can take care of the assembly and dismantling on site. We also organise the transports.

3D on a computer?

We provide our collection of rental properties as 3D data in various digital formats.

Individual objects are briefly sketched by hand and then drawn in the computer. Sometimes they are modified using existing client data. A lot of knowledge goes into this step, the technical design. This is based on years of practical experience with textile buildings. Even with rough calculations, the design needs to be well thought out.

The optimal unwinding of the fabrics is planned on the computer and passed on to the studio.

You will find a large part of our rental collection in the Easy Raum planning software.
